Carroll Withdraws From NI Squad

by Danny Wright

Roy Carroll has withdrawn from the Northern Ireland squad to face Latvia and Iceland in crunch Euro 2008 qualifiers.

The former Hull City and Wigan stopper - now at SPL giants Rangers - said he wants to focus on his club career and made the decision following talks with manager Nigel Worthington.

Carroll has never established himself as a firm first choice at any of his former clubs and looks for a new berth at the Scottish club, having spent relatively unsuccessful spells at Manchester United and West Ham respectively.

High profile errors at United signaled the end of his Old Trafford career, meanwhile limited opportunities at the Hammers ended his two-year spell at the London club.

Celtic's Michael McGovern will join Birmingham's Maik Taylor in the squad, with Carroll remaining on stand-by.
