Interview: Shay Given - Newcastle & Republic of Ireland

Disappointed Given supports Keane

Newcastle United keeper Shay Given has admitted he was disappointed not to be made Republic of Ireland skipper but has backed Robbie Keane's appointment.

New manager Steve Staunton plumped for Keane, capped 64 times, to take over from the retired Kenny Cunningham.

Staunton felt it would be better to have an outfield skipper with Given taking up the vice-captaincy role.

"You would be disappointed if you were not selected," said Given, earning his 75th cap against Sweden on Wednesday.

"I have still a big part to play, which is probably why he gave me the vice-captaincy role."

Given, not wishing any ill will on Keane, is looking forward to the moment when he is captain - no matter how fleeting.

Shay is a great pro and was deserving of the Irish Captaincy in my opinion. His performances for Ireland have been consistently high for a number of years. I think the way he's handled not being made skipper speaks volumes to the type of man Shay is. He's a great role model for young goalkeepers not only in Ireland but worldwide. I've written a few pieces surrounding Shay & the Ireland captaincy on my blog, 'A Northsider On The South Terrace' ( http://southterraceview.blogspot.com ).

Keep up the good work with the site. I enjoyed reading some of the other pieces too
